The Alters Review: Kojima-esque Weirdness In A Tale Of Sci-fi Survival

I wondered why I was so hesitant to interact with them the same way I do any other artistic medium. I could talk your ear off about the camera work in Citizen Kane and what it establishes about Charles Foster Kane at every juncture of his life, but I wasn’t thinking about the minutiae of game design the same way. Something as simple as The Last of Us’ crafting system communicates something about the world. It tells us that resources are scarce in an apocalyptic world that’s been cleaned out by scavengers.

Such are the demands of the economy on default difficulty, it feels as if you need to optimize every single second of the game’s 24-hour day-and-night cycle. Jan Botanist gets to work making veggies in the garden, then rustles up nourishing meals in the kitchen. Jan Refiner processes the raw materials; Jan Scientist researches new technologies in his lab. It took me a while to realise I wasn’t building some cute automated process, machines busily whirring away while I slept or got on with other equally important tasks, but had to manually dedicate hours each day to operating everything myself.

It really gets into the dark side of humanity more than the previous seasons. MercurySteam makes its bold return with Blades of Fire, a Soulslike with some revolutionary mechanics but some serious pacing issues. After scrambling past lava rivers, radiation spots, and rocky terrain, he arrives at the mission base – a giant wheel-shaped ship. Jan soon realizes that unless he gets the base moving, the entire station will be engulfed in an intense radiation wave emitted from the sun, and he’ll be fried to a crisp. He can’t pilot the ship without a crew; there’s just too much to do for just one person. Faced with the threat of total annihilation, he makes a life-altering choice and decides to clone himself. Every storyline lands with a neat bow that feels unearned and seems more interested in setting up franchise expansion than closing this story with the weight it deserves.

This simulation game, created by Pathos Interactive and published in May 2025, seeks to establish a niche in a market already dominated by industry titans like SimTower and Two Point Campus. But Avowed isn’t just a first-person action game, and after a while the artifice of its RPG systems started to show. These limits first became apparent when I, a lowly thief, realised I can rob people blind with no consequences at all. It’s possible to just enter some public figure’s house, have a look around, open their chests and lockboxes, rob them of their coins, and the worst I’ll receive is a mild scolding. I don’t think Avowed’s combat could sustain my attention over the course of a linear, 15-hour action game, but as one of the main components in a story-led, exploration-rewarding RPG, it’s a lot more fun than I had dared hope for.

“Bass Defense” on PC ventures into a captivating and somewhat uncharted territory, effectively merging the strategic depth of tower defense with the rhythmic precision of a music game. This hybrid approach creates a truly unique and engaging experience, demanding players not only strategize their defenses but also execute them with rhythmic accuracy. The momentary cracks in Gi-hun’s moral resolve are distressing but also surprisingly grounding. He’s way more relatable than a hero who unwaveringly commits to taking the high road. While most of the game works extremely well, there are some aspects that detract from the experience.

Ruined King: A League Of Legends Story

Once I’ve attacked—whether from cover or using an invisibility spell—every baddie in the vicinity knows I’m there. Avowed is surprisingly combat heavy, especially in its second half. It’s possible to play with the usual array of melee weapons—swords, axes, spears, maces—but you’d be missing out on a lot if you’re not playing Avowed like 21st century Hexen, mixing powerful ranged attacks with down-and-dirty close quarters hacking. Every one-handed weapon can be dual-wielded, so I normally roamed with a grimoire in one hand and a fire-enchanted sword in the other, raining down elemental area of effect attacks on bears, bugs and lizardmen before sprinting in to hack away. For the magic averse, it’s also possible to muscle about with a mace in one hand and a pistol in the other, for example.

Want to make something out of the most horrific clown nightmare you’ve ever had? Not every bit of customization has a ton of options yet (there are only four emotes to choose from after scoring a goal, for instance), but what’s here is good. At this point, I’ve learned how to extract water out of the blood of my enemies, how to walk under the shadow whenever possible, how to take advantage of the day and night cycle, and how to create an early base of operations that isn’t completely embarrassing. It’s that Rust/Minecraft-like experience but Dune, sure, but I can already see the tip of something greater protruding from the sands. The mystery of the disappearance of the Fremen is also a solid enough hook to keep me going through the main quest instead of getting sidetracked, and every excursion I make to collect resources doesn’t feel like a chore.

In games that I’ve played, you kill anyone who stands in your way, take resources no matter what, and do whatever it takes to stay alive. Having a character take the time to cognizantly mull over the potential consequences of his actions is a really unique take on the genre. There are classes and backgrounds to choose from, but all skill trees—fighter, ranger, wizard, and godlike—are available to all classes, and I ended up with a fully blended build without feeling disadvantaged for not specialising.

It has been my goal in the past few years to inspire that feeling in anyone who reads a Digital Trends game review. Gaming is an evolving artform and I believe that the way we talk about it needs to change to meet that transformation. It now feels hollow to praise a game simply because it has hyper realistic graphics and 100’s of hours of content.
